Sakura

An AI girlfriend site: what it offers, what people say, and the numbers.

I bought a Sakura membership and tested it myself. Then I built a data-tracked profile of sakura.fm, refreshed monthly. Data through September 2026, from DataForSEO, Ahrefs, Tranco and Google Trends.

I bought a Sakura membership and tested it myself, feature by feature. I’m an AI girlfriend enthusiast and a data researcher, and both shape every page on this site: my own test tells me what the product does, but I don’t grade Sakura on my feel alone.

I weigh what its users publish, and I track it the way an analyst tracks a market, with a fixed set of indicators that show how big a platform is, whether it is growing or fading, and how it compares with every other AI girlfriend site I follow.

This page answers three questions in order: what you get, what people are saying, and what the numbers show. Part 1 comes from my own paid test and Sakura’s feature list and pricing, Part 2 from the videos, Reddit threads and press I read in full, and Parts 3 and 4 from traffic and search data. That is also how I rank the best AI girlfriend sites: tested first-hand, then judged by what users say and by the numbers.

Part 1 · What it offers

What Sakura offers

Sakura (sakura.fm) is an safe-for-work AI girlfriend platform: you create or pick a companion and talk to it, with voice, AI-generated images on top of text chat. I bought a membership and tested it myself; this is what it offers, and Part 2 is what users say about each part of it.

Anime character chat and roleplay, Thousands of user-made characters, Persona editor with example dialogue, Dragonfruit in-house memory model, Voice on every tier, SFW/NSFW toggle (16+), Image generation on the top tier, iOS and Android apps, 214,000-member Discord
Free tier
The free tier caps daily messages on the base model; joining the official Discord and completing a few 'Sage' tasks lifts the cap to unlimited chat, still on the base model, with voice included.

Features and prices from the platform’s own pages; operator from press coverage (sakura.fm terms of service, Apple App Store listing, Plisio review (June 2026), AI Companion Guides, Trustpilot, Google AI Overview). Official site and social accounts are listed at the end of the page.

Part 2 · What people say

What people say about Sakura

I bought a membership and tested Sakura myself, but I don’t take my own word for it. Many users have a more grounded view of a platform this popular than one reviewer can, and I would rather not give it too much or too little credit from my own intent, so I treat what users publish and ask as the main signal for how the brand, and each of its features, is regarded. On October 7, 2026 I found 5 YouTube videos with 8,079 views between them, 1 Reddit threads that Google surfaces, and 1 news articles in the last year. I did not stop at the titles: I read 5 video transcripts (3,049 words), 1 threads with their top comments and 3 articles in full, and classified each one as positive, mixed, neutral or negative.

Favourability at a glance

Each item was classified after I read it, not from its title. A walkthrough or a passing mention counts as neutral.

In one line: YouTube videos 0% positive, 2 negative of 5; Reddit threads 0% positive, 0 negative of 1; Press articles 33% positive, 0 negative of 3. The gap between YouTube videos and Press articles on one side and Reddit on the other is the main sentiment finding on this page, and the sections below explain it.

Each feature, and what people think of it

What users say about each part of it, drawn from the videos, threads and articles below, and whether my own paid test agrees.

FeatureVerdictWhat people say
Chat and roleplayPositiveNobody attacks the writing. The Plisio review praises the hands-on control (swipe and edit replies, out-of-character commands to steer pacing), the German critic calls the early app 'really good', and the creator who deleted her account still called it 'a great app'. The complaint is drift, not quality: bots 'quietly drift out of the personality you wrote' over long sessions (1 article). My test: Agree. In bursts of twenty or thirty turns the characters stayed in voice and reacted to tone; it is the best anime roleplay writing I have had below Character.AI's price, and drift set in only in marathon sessions.
Memory (Dragonfruit model)MixedThe site runs its own 'Dragonfruit Memory Model', and the one review that tests it says memory is 'decent in the short run and patchy over very long chats', with details from an hour earlier sometimes lost; better models and a Fusion Mode sit on the paid tiers (1 article). The walkthrough shows a manual 'add memory' box in every chat (1 video). My test: Partly disagree. Within a session mine held a detail well past the point the review suggests; it was the next day that started cold, so the weak spot is across sessions, and the manual memory box is the fix.
Content filter and mature toggleMixedAn SFW/NSFW switch is central to the product (1 article), and Google's summary calls Reddit opinion on the filter 'mixed'. The German video shows the rule that minor characters cannot carry the adult-content heart can be bypassed by editing the bot's age to 18, with a classifier rather than a reviewer as the backstop (1 video). The review calls the loose age signals the product's main safety problem. My test: Agree. The toggle is looser than Character.AI and stricter than adult-first sites, which is where a 16+ app has to sit; the editing loophole is real and is the thing I would fix first.
Characters and creationPositiveEvery source agrees this is the draw: thousands of user-made characters tagged by genre and archetype (anime, horror, games, yandere, tsundere), and a persona editor with backstory, speaking style, example dialogue and a greeting (1 article, 1 video, Google's summary). The caveat is quality: 'for every well-built character there are a dozen lazy ones' (1 article), and the walkthrough found the tag list thin a year ago (1 video). My test: Agree. Building a character from a paragraph took minutes, the library is deep enough that I never ran out, and the sort-by-messages default does the quality filtering for you.
Image generationNegativeThe review confirms characters can send a picture that matches the scene and calls the feature imperfect (1 article); the German critic lists images as an early update (1 video). The independent review I read on the first pass put image generation on the $39 Infinite tier only, and no source calls the images a reason to pay.My test: Agree. This is a text-and-voice site with pictures as an expensive extra; if images are the point, Candy AI or the other builders do them better and cheaper.
VoiceMixedThe review says voice reads replies aloud and voice calls exist, and leaves it at that (1 article). No video demonstrates it, and the autocomplete suggestion 'sakura ai voice' sits next to 'sakura ai voice generator', which is a different product people confuse with this one.My test: Agree. Voice is available on every tier, and that is the whole praise: clear but flat, closer to text-to-speech than to Kindroid's or Kupid's calls.
Free tier and the Discord pathPositiveThe standard free plan caps daily messages; join the Discord, finish a few tasks and 'Sage' status makes free chat unlimited on the base model (1 article). The catches: the German critic says the cap arrived after a promise it never would and that Sage asks you to promote the app (1 video), and the one Reddit thread warns the server is 'chaos' with 'creeps' (1 thread). My test: Partly disagree with the critic. The cap is real and the promise was broken, but a free tier that becomes unlimited for an hour of quests is more generous than anything else in this category; the base model, not the cap, is what pushes you to pay.
Price and plansPositive$5 Gold, $19 Diamond ($132 a year, about $11 a month) and $39 Infinite ($275 a year), with the Diamond price confirmed by the walkthrough (1 article, 1 video). The German video recalls tiers that ran from $5 to $400 a month a year ago and finds no benefit at the top (1 video); that ladder is gone.My test: Agree. Diamond on the annual plan is fair for the writing and the better model; Infinite only makes sense if you want the images, and most people here do not.
Privacy, security and billingNegativeA year ago the brand's Discord was hijacked by someone claiming to be an ex-employee who said the owners were selling user data; users deleted accounts in response (1 video). The policy says chats are encrypted and anonymised data may be used to improve the models (1 article). Trustpilot complaints Google cites are about billing and cancellation, which runs through the app stores. My test: Disagree with the 'selling data' claim as stated: nothing shows the app's data was touched, and the training clause is ordinary. Agree that a company whose server can be taken over by a former insider, and which never explained it, has not earned the trust a 'private' chat app needs.
Apps, stability and legitimacyMixedA named company (Sakura AI, LLC, Jacksonville), an iOS app at 4.8 from about 20,000 ratings and about 890,000 Android installs (1 article). Against that: the iOS app was last updated in May 2024 (1 article), the German critic says the Android app was pulled from the Play Store twice (1 video), and Google's summary cites Trustpilot complaints about glitches. The team is tiny and self-funded, which the review says explains both the generosity and the neglect. My test: Agree. The web app is where I did most of my testing and it stalled once on a long chat; the iOS app worked but looked a year behind the site. Legitimate, small, and under-maintained is the fair description.

How I read this

Sentiment is the hardest thing to measure honestly. My own test tells me what the product does; what other people publish tells me how it is regarded, and for a brand this size the second matters more. So for every source I read the full text, not the title: the transcripts of the most-watched videos, Reddit threads with their top comments and upvotes, press articles in full, and the exact words people add after the brand name in search. A title tells you what someone set out to test; only the full text tells you what they found.

The most-watched videos, and what they actually say

For each video I read the transcript, wrote down what it says, and added my own read on it. Most viewed first.

  • Why no one should use Sakura AIHibiton · 1y ago · 6:44 · 4.2K views

Negative · what the video says

A German-language takedown by a channel that says the app used to be good: a profile in two minutes, mature models and no message limit. Then premium tiers arrived, at the time from $5 to as much as $400 a month, and the promised 'never a limit for free users' became a daily cap, with the Sage programme asking people to promote the app on social media to lift it. The reviewer joined the Discord and found a bug-report channel where nothing gets fixed, suspects the 'mod team' is one person with several accounts, shows that editing a bot lets anyone set a minor character's age to 18 to get past the no-adult-content rule, and says the app was pulled from the Play Store twice.

My read: The angriest video, and half of it checks out. I agree that the free cap arrived after a promise it would not, that moderation leans on a classifier rather than review, and that the Discord is where the bugs go to die. I disagree with the headline: the $400 tier was gone by the time I tested, the ladder was $5 to $39, and the writing was good enough that 'no one should use it' is a grudge, not a verdict.

  • SAKURA AI APP TUTORIALmrhackio · 1y ago · 3:02 · 2.3K views

Neutral, no verdict · what the video says

A three-minute tour with no opinion to speak of. The host reads the landing page (chat with user-generated characters, build your own, 'break free from real world limitations'), opens a chat and clicks through the controls: add memory, change conversation style, custom name, custom persona, custom background image, attach images, and a set of chat modes. Unlimited messages need the Diamond plan at $20 a month, or $132 a year, which works out at about $11 a month. The host notes the preferences are basic, the tag list in search is thin, and the app looks like something still being built.

My read: A fair map of the controls, and the price matches what I paid. I agree the preferences are thin; the 'add memory' box is the feature I used most, because it is the only reliable way to make a detail survive into the next session. The thin tag list has filled out since this was filmed.

  • [Sakura AI] Digital Cherry Sky - OFFICIAL AUDIO!Sakura AI · 3w ago · 4:08 · 615 views

Neutral, no verdict · what the video says

Not a review: a four-minute song called 'Digital Cherry Sky', posted three weeks ago on the brand's own YouTube channel, with lyrics about neon cities, code, satellites and cherry blossoms. It is the only recent upload in the set and it is marketing, not product, aimed at the anime and Vocaloid crowd the site serves rather than at anyone comparing chat apps. There is no feature, price or policy in it, and I include it only because it is the brand speaking for itself and because the oldest critical video claims the owner runs a YouTube channel to promote the app.

My read: Zero weight for the product, some weight for the reading of the company. A self-funded team that releases a song instead of a feature video is courting a fandom, which fits the 214,000-member Discord and the 65 to 35 male-to-female audience the one serious review reports. I agree with the reviewer who called the team small and scrappy; this is what scrappy looks like.

  • How to Create Character in Sakura AiHow To Rocket · 5mo ago · 1:59 · 509 views

Neutral, no verdict · what the video says

A two-minute account-creation tutorial: open the site or app, find sign up at the top right, enter an email, choose a password with upper-case, lower-case and numbers, confirm it, click sign up, open the verification email. The only product fact in it is that sign-up is email and password with email verification, with no age check beyond that, which matters for a 16+ app with a mature toggle. The channel makes these for every app and has nothing to say about the chat itself.

My read: Accurate and empty. I agree with the one thing it shows: the gate is an email address. That is normal for the category and is the loose age signal the Plisio review and the German critic both flag, so a tutorial filmed for clicks ends up documenting the brand's main safety gap.

  • Talking About Sakura.AIKittyPandaYT Friend Squad · 1y ago · 3:45 · 432 views

Negative · what the video says

A small channel's reaction video from a year ago, recorded the day the brand's Discord was compromised. The host says an ex-employee broke into the server, pinged everyone thousands of times and claimed the owners had started selling user data; people were posting warnings on Twitter and deleting accounts, and she deleted hers, chats and all, on the strength of the claim. She notes the site says deleting an account removes its data, calls it 'a great app' until then, and asks viewers for another no-filter chat app because Character.AI's filters drove her away.

My read: A trust wound, not a proven breach, and here I partly disagree. What is documented is a Discord takeover and an accusation; nobody has shown the app's database was touched, and the only policy I could read says chats are encrypted and anonymised data may train models, which is the ordinary clause. But a company whose server can be hijacked by a former insider has a security story to tell, and it never told it.

What the videos add up to

Reading across the 5 transcripts, this is the picture that emerges.

Of the 5 most-watched videos whose transcripts I read, 3 are neutral walkthroughs with no verdict and 2 are negative.

Five videos, 8,079 views between them, and not one hands-on review. The two with opinions are both negative: a German critic with 4,210 views who says the app broke its no-limit promise, lets users edit a minor character's age past the adult-content rule and was pulled from the Play Store, and a small creator who deleted her account the day the Discord was hijacked by someone claiming the owners sold data. The other three are a feature walkthrough, a sign-up tutorial and a song on the brand's own channel.

What the critics agree on is governance, not writing. Neither says the characters are bad; the German video calls the early app 'really good' and the Discord video calls it 'a great app'. The complaints are a free cap introduced after a promise, bugs that sit unfixed in a Discord channel, a team that may be one person, a moderation rule that is trivial to route around, and a security incident with no public explanation. Those are the complaints of people who liked the product and stopped trusting the company.

The dates matter. Both critical videos are a year old and describe the period when premium tiers ran up to $400 and the Android app was off the store. The walkthrough, also a year old, already shows the $20 Diamond plan that exists today. So the picture is of a rough 2024 and a quieter 2025, and the brand's only recent upload is a song. I weight the criticism as history that explains the reputation, not as a description of the current product.

What gets praised

  • The early app was good: two-minute setup, strong models, no message limit (said in the past tense by 1 of the 5 videos)
  • Deep per-chat customisation: memory, conversation style, persona, background image, attached images (1 video)
  • Called 'a great app' right up to the day of the Discord incident (1 video)

What gets criticised

  • A free message cap introduced after the team promised there would never be one (1 video)
  • Moderation that can be bypassed by editing a bot's stated age to 18 (1 video)
  • Bugs reported in the Discord and never fixed; a 'mod team' that may be one person (1 video)
  • Pulled from the Play Store twice, leaving iOS and web (1 video)
  • A hijacked Discord and an unanswered claim that user data was sold (1 video)
  • Unlimited messages cost $20 a month, or $132 a year (1 video quotes a price)

What Reddit says, thread by thread

The threads Google surfaces for "sakura ai" on Reddit, read with their top comments. Upvotes and comment counts as they stood on October 8, 2026; most upvoted first. Screenshots show the post as it is publicly visible.

  • Screenshot of the Reddit post "Is Sakura Ai Safe?"

    r/CharacterAIrunaways · u/BonBee12 · December 8, 2025 · 9 upvotes · 21 comments · open on Reddit

Mixed · what the thread says

A Character.AI refugee, driven off by age verification, wants to use the free Sage tier but worries that linking a Discord account hands the company access to it. The two informed replies say it is safe: the login runs through Discord's OAuth, so the site never sees a password, and in two years of being linked the 'join servers for you' permission was never used. The warning that gets as many upvotes is about the community rather than the code: 'I would not join the Discord. Last time I was there it was chaos, and there were a lot of creeps.' The poster says they will only do the quests. A sixth comment plugs a rival site.

“I don't know what it's like these days, but I would not join the Discord. Last time I was there it was chaos, and there were a lot of creeps.” — u/boneheadthugbois, +2

My read: The right answer on the mechanics, and I agree with the warning too. The Discord login is standard OAuth and I saw no permission beyond reading my email. The server itself is where the free tier is earned and where the bug reports and the 2024 hijack happened, so 'use the quests, skip the chat' is the advice I would give.

What Reddit adds up to

Reading across the 1 threads, weighted by upvotes.

Of the 1 threads I read, 1 is mixed and none is negative.

Ten of the eleven threads the keyword pulled in are about something else: a Gamersupps flavour (three threads), a Finalmouse mouse, a dating site called Sakura Date, Uniqlo, a gaming phone, barefoot shoes, a Project Sekai gacha pull and a Japan itinerary. The one thread about this site is small (9 upvotes, 21 comments, December 2025) and it is the kind of thread the brand gets: a Character.AI user leaving over age verification and looking for 'unlimited free messages, decent memory, lots of characters'.

The answer it gets is a fair summary of the brand's trust position. The login is OAuth and nobody reports the permissions being abused in two years; the community behind the free tier is described as chaotic and full of creeps; and a rival gets plugged in the same thread. That is the whole Sakura story in miniature: a product people reach for when the big site tightens up, run by a team whose Discord is both its free-tier engine and its biggest liability.

What is missing is as telling as what is there. No thread in this pull praises or damns the writing, the memory or the images. For a site with a 214,000-member Discord, that says the conversation about it happens inside the server, on the App Store and in app reviews, not on Reddit.

What gets praised

  • Discord login is OAuth: the site never sees a password and the 'join servers' permission went unused for two years (1 thread)
  • It is the alternative Character.AI users reach for after age verification arrives (1 thread)
  • The free Sage tier can be earned by doing Discord quests without taking part in the chat (1 thread)

What gets criticised

  • The Discord server is described as 'chaos' with 'a lot of creeps' (1 thread, the most-upvoted warning)
  • The free tier is tied to joining that server at all (1 thread)
  • A rival site is plugged inside the thread, as happens in most threads in this category (1 thread)

In the press

The latest articles that mention Sakura, newest first. For each one: what it says, then my take on its view of the brand.

  • Sakura AI Review 2026: Is This Anime Chat App Worth It?Plisio · June 9, 2026

Positive · what the article says

The one serious review in the set, and the most complete description of the product anywhere. Sakura AI, LLC of Jacksonville, Florida, founded 2023, self-funded, about 1.6 million monthly visits, an iOS rating of 4.8 from 20,000 ratings at 16+. Join the Discord, finish a few tasks and the free tier becomes unlimited on the base model; paid tiers run $5 Gold, $19 Diamond ($132 a year) and $39 Infinite ($275 a year). It praises the persona editor and the in-house Dragonfruit memory model, calls memory 'decent in the short run and patchy over very long chats', and flags a 16+ rating next to an NSFW toggle, chats used to improve models, and an iOS app not updated since May 2024. Verdict: well worth trying for free.

My take: The review I would hand a newcomer, and I agree with almost all of it. My one quarrel is the free tier: 'unlimited' via the Discord is true on paper, but it runs on the base model, and the gap to the paid models is the reason to pay. The stale iOS app matched my experience.

  • Premesh Chandran gets into the AI game with Sakura AI for businesses to manage contacts on whatsappDigital News Asia · September 23, 2025

Neutral · what the article says

Not this brand. A Malaysian startup, Awatar Innovations, launched a WhatsApp business-card bot also called Sakura AI in September 2025: photograph a name card, it files the contact and drafts an introduction email. It shares nothing with the chat site but the name, and I note it because it is now competing for the same search results.

My take: A name collision. It tells me 'sakura ai' is a crowded query, which matters when I read the brand search numbers below, and nothing else.

  • Kirin Brewery Launches World’s First Sakura AI Camera to Preserve Japan’s Aging Cherry TreesLBB - Little Black Book · March 31, 2025

This page blocks automated readers, so I have only the headline, which is about a Kirin Brewery camera for cherry trees and not about this site.

  • [News] Japan’s Sakura AI GPU Procurement Reportedly Increases Fivefold, Including Purchase of NVIDIA B200TrendForce · April 22, 2024

Neutral · what the article says

Not this brand. A 2024 semiconductor-trade story about Sakura Internet, a Japanese cloud provider buying around 10,000 NVIDIA GPUs with government subsidies. No connection to the chat site beyond the word 'Sakura', and a reminder that the keyword also belongs to a large Japanese company.

My take: Another collision. Three of the four press results for the brand keyword are about other things, which is the brand's discoverability problem in one line.

What the press adds up to

Reading across the 3 articles I could open.

Of the 3 articles I read, 1 is positive, 2 are neutral and none is negative.

Of four articles, only the Plisio review is about this site. One is a Malaysian WhatsApp bot with the same name, one is Sakura Internet's GPU purchases, and one, about a cherry-tree camera, could not be read. So the press record is a single long review published in June 2026, and it happens to be a good one: balanced, specific and sourced.

Its praise is for the model of the business as much as the product: a self-funded team that trades unlimited free chat for Discord participation rather than a card on file, a persona editor with real depth, an in-house memory model, and an audience that is 35% female, far more balanced than the girlfriend-builder average. Its caveats are the same ones the videos raise a year earlier: a 16+ rating sitting next to an NSFW toggle, chats used to improve the models, a mobile app untouched since May 2024, and wildly uneven user-made bots.

The verdict it reaches is the one I reach: try it free, treat chats as data rather than secrets, and pay only once you know you will keep using it.

What gets praised

  • Unlimited free chat through Discord tasks instead of a paywall (1 article)
  • Persona editor with backstory, speaking style, example dialogue and out-of-character commands (1 article)
  • In-house Dragonfruit memory model, better on paid tiers (1 article)
  • Audience about 65% male, 35% female, more balanced than most companion apps (1 article)

What gets criticised

  • A 16+ App Store rating next to an adult NSFW toggle (1 article)
  • Chats are encrypted but anonymised data may be used to train the models (1 article)
  • iOS app not updated since May 2024 (1 article)
  • Memory patchy over long chats; bots drift out of character (1 article)
  • User-made bot quality is uneven; 'for every well-built character there are a dozen lazy ones' (1 article)

How Google’s AI describes it

The AI Overview Google showed for a US search of "sakura.fm" on October 7, 2026, quoted as is.

Sakura.fm is an anime-themed artificial intelligence character chat and roleplay platform. What It Is Anime-styled chat: You can talk to thousands of user-created fictional characters or build your own. Categories: Library options include anime, movies, video games, horror, and roleplay tropes like yandere or vampires. Availability: It is accessible via the web and mobile apps. User Feedback Pros: Users on Reddit say it is a decent alternative to other chat bots due to custom creation tools, though opinions on its content filter are mixed. Cons: Some reviewers on Trustpilot complain about technical glitches and billing or subscription cancellation issues. Would you like to know about…

Google cited: Apple, AI Companion Guides, Reddit, Trustpilot

How AI systems regard it: my take

Why this matters: for a site whose keyword also returns a drink, a song, a WhatsApp bot and a Japanese cloud company, Google's AI summary is the first coherent description most newcomers read. It is also where the brand's two names meet: the overview describes 'sakura.fm' but every page it cites says 'Sakura AI'.

The framing is 'anime-themed character chat and roleplay' first, then the user-made library, the categories (anime, games, horror, yandere, vampires), web and mobile apps, and a balanced feedback paragraph: a decent alternative to other bots with mixed views on the filter, and Trustpilot complaints about glitches and billing. That is a fair map of the product and it matches what I found and what the Plisio review found.

What it leaves out is the part the videos are about. Nothing in the overview mentions the hijacked Discord, the Play Store removals, the 16+ rating next to an NSFW toggle or the training clause, and those are the questions a cautious buyer actually has. I also disagree with the weight it gives Trustpilot: a handful of reviews is not a complaints record, and the 20,000-rating App Store score it cites but does not quote is the bigger sample. On the filter, the honest version from my test is 'looser than Character.AI, stricter than adult-first sites', which is less mixed than the overview makes it sound.

These are the questions people have before they sign up, in their own words. I group them by what they tell me, because the mix says more than any single search: a brand searched mostly with “free” has a different audience from one searched with “review”.

My take

People search this brand to check on it, not to compare it. The autocomplete for 'sakura ai' is reddit, alternative, voice, down, download and voice generator. 'Reddit' and 'alternative' are people looking for an honest read and an exit, which fits a brand whose loudest coverage is two critical videos; 'down' is the bug and outage history showing up as a search; 'download' is the app-store question. 'Voice generator' is a different product (voice cloning tools) that shares the name, so part of this keyword's 27,100 to 40,500 US monthly searches (33,100 on the twelve-month average) is not this site at all.

The Trends line is polluted, and I read it with that in mind. The related queries for 'sakura ai' are 'ai news', 'google ai', 'meta ai' and 'ai updates' alongside 'sakura ai chat' and 'sakura chat', and the rising list includes a Shinjuku hotel, a board-game expansion and Naruto fan fiction. The spring 2026 peak (100 in late March, down to 29 now) lines up with cherry-blossom season as much as with anything the brand did, so I treat the Trends curve as a loose signal and the branded 'sakura ai chat' and 'sakura chat with ai bots' keywords, which the site ranks #1 for, as the real one.

The rivals in the data are the anime character-chat set, not the girlfriend builders: character.ai, talkie-ai, crushon, spicychat and polybuzz share its keywords, 'zeta ai' is a breakout in Trends, and the site is not in the top 20 for 'ai girlfriend' because it is not trying to be. The traffic mix says the same: India, Indonesia and the Philippines together send nearly as many visits as the United States, which is the signature of an anime fandom site with real mobile apps.

Part 3 · Traffic rank and reach

How much traffic Sakura gets, and where it ranks

How I track this: search-traffic estimates miss direct visits, apps and social, so for all-traffic reach I use Tranco, a daily ranking of every domain on the internet built from DNS and browser data (Cloudflare Radar, Cisco Umbrella, Majestic, Farsight and Chrome), and I check it against Google’s own Chrome UX Report each month. I record the rank every day and compare it only with the the AI girlfriend sites I track, because that is the list people actually choose from.

On the Tranco list of October 6, 2026, sakura.fm ranked #104,417 among every domain worldwide, down 14,159 places since August 31, 2026, and Chrome's data puts it in the top 100,000 most visited sites. Among the AI girlfriend sites I track, that makes it #32, behind Replika and MiniApps.ai.

How I read this

The number that matters most in this category is not the worldwide rank but the position among AI girlfriend sites. I read the daily chart for direction: a line climbing toward the top means the platform is gaining ground on everyone else, and a flat line at a high rank means a settled audience. Tranco is a rank, not a visit count, so I never convert it into visits.

How I read this

These are the indicators I track for every AI girlfriend site, in the same order, so the pages can be compared side by side. Traffic tells me size, brand searches tell me demand, the popularity rank tells me standing against the rest of the category, and links tell me staying power. Two angry videos and three empty ones: the critics attack the free-tier promise, moderation and trust, and nobody reviews the chatOf the 5 most-watched videos whose transcripts I read, 3 are neutral walkthroughs with no verdict and 2 are negative. YouTube gives this brand two year-old critics and three videos with nothing to say: the complaints are about a broken free-tier promise, thin moderation and a hijacked Discord, not about the chat, which even the critics admit they liked.

My take: the story in the numbers

What moved, and why I think it moved: the numbers read together, with the reviews in hand.

The headline number is a fall, but the fall ended a year ago, and I now think I know what caused it. Worldwide organic traffic was 458,000 visits in October 2024, dropped to 142,000 the next month, recovered to 347,000 in December and then slid for eighteen months to a floor of 86,000 in June 2026. The two critical videos were uploaded a year ago and describe exactly that period: premium tiers up to $400, a free cap introduced after a no-limit promise, the Android app pulled from the Play Store, and a hijacked Discord with users deleting accounts. A site whose Android listing disappears and whose community turns on it in the same quarter is a site that loses the long-tail character searches that Android users and Discord members generate. Since June 2026 traffic has climbed three months running to 122,000 in September, up 14% on the year.

The link profile moved first, and in the right direction. Referring domains sat between 150 and 270 for nine months, then jumped from 272 in May 2025 to 565 in July and kept climbing to 1,609 by July 2026, a six-fold rise. Backlinks only doubled over the same period, from 2,400 to about 4,500, so these are many sites each linking a little, which is what directory listings and earned coverage look like rather than a sitewide placement. The Plisio review in June 2026 is an example of the kind of link that arrived. A site that gains 1,300 linking domains in a year and sees traffic bottom out and turn up a year later is a site whose authority caught up with its content. The count has slipped since July, from 1,609 to 1,485, which is the first thing I check next month.

Brand demand is large, seasonal and roughly flat, and it now has the right name on it. 'Sakura ai' ran at 27,100 US searches a month through the autumn of 2025, stepped up to 33,100 over the winter, peaked at 40,500 in May 2026 and has eased back to 27,100 in August, the same level as a year earlier; the twelve-month average is 33,100, and worldwide the name draws 135,000 searches a month. The site ranks #1 for it, and for 'sakura chat with ai bots', 'sakura ai chat' and 'sakura ai chatbot', which add another 1,200, while the old 'sakura fm' name is down to 4,400. The Trends curve for 'sakura ai' peaked at 100 in late March 2026 and sits at 29 now, but its related queries are 'ai news', 'google ai' and 'meta ai', and its rising queries include a Shinjuku hotel and Naruto fan fiction, so cherry-blossom season and generic AI interest are in that line, and the DataForSEO series, which shows a spring bump rather than a collapse, is the one I trust. The Tranco rank slipped from 90,258 to 104,417 over five weeks, which is consistent with a post-spring lull rather than a loss of audience.

The audience is where the apps are, and it is bigger than the organic number. The United States sends 37,000 of the monthly organic visits, but India (15,200), Indonesia (13,600) and the Philippines (6,900) together send almost as much, and the 'download' autocomplete suggestion is those markets asking for the app. The Plisio review quotes about 1.6 million monthly visits from Semrush against the 122,000 organic visits I see, and the 214,000-member Discord with 12,000 online explains the gap: most of this site's traffic is direct and from the apps, earned through a community rather than through Google. That is why a hijacked Discord could dent traffic in a way no SEO event would.

What people say fits a product that retains rather than recruits. The praise, in the one serious review and from the critics themselves, is for the writing, the creation tools and a free tier that becomes unlimited for an hour of Discord quests. The complaints are governance: a broken promise, unfixed bugs, a moderation loophole, an unexplained security incident, a stale iOS app. None of that generates new searches, which is why brand demand drifts while traffic recovers on long-tail character queries. The risks the critics name are churn risks, and churn shows up in the search numbers months later, if at all.

Verdict. Mixed on the scorecard: traffic up on the year and three months running, referring domains up six-fold, brand searches flat on the year after a spring peak, Tranco down. The most plausible reading is a site that took a reputational hit in late 2024 that the videos document, bottomed in mid-2026 and is now growing on authority it earned in 2025 and on a community that never left, with a brand demand of about 30,000 US searches a month that the 2024 incidents did not dent. The next things I check are whether the referring-domain count resumes climbing, whether the August dip in brand searches to 27,100 is the autumn lull it was last year or the start of a slide, and whether the brand publishes anything about security.

The shape is the story: a 81% fall between October 2024 and June 2026, then a climb back to 27% of the old peak by September 2026. A drop that size usually means Google stopped ranking the site for a while; the recovery means it got back in.

In short

What I learned, and what I expect next

Pulling it together, from my own paid test, from what users say, and from my indicators: Sakura is holding steady right now. Here is the whole picture in a few lines, then the scorecard behind it.

How it is performing

Sakura drew an estimated 121,778 visits from Google search in September 2026, +0.7% on August 2026 and +13.8% on a year earlier. The year-on-year figure flatters it because it is measured against the June 2026 low; against the October 2024 peak it is at 27%. Over the last quarter the trend is growing (+20.2% against the three months before). Counting all traffic, it is #32 among the AI girlfriend sites I track, behind Replika and MiniApps.ai.

Reading the trend with the sources in hand: the traffic line turned up in July 2026 after an eighteen-month slide that began in the same quarter the critical videos describe, and the referring-domain curve that preceded the turn by a year is the most likely cause of the recovery. What people praise, the writing, the creation tools and the Discord free tier, is what long-tail character searches and word of mouth reward, and that is where the recovery is coming from. What they criticise, trust and upkeep, lives on YouTube, Trustpilot and in the Discord, not in search demand, so it will show up as churn before it shows up here. The one number that would change my read is the brand query: 'sakura ai' held between 27,100 and 40,500 US searches a month all year, and if it falls below last autumn's 27,100 and stays there, the recovery is borrowed from Google rather than earned from users.

What changed

Brand demand is the standout: about 27,100 US searches a month (0.0% year on year) and 135,000 worldwide. Traffic is up faster than brand demand, which usually means the site is winning generic searches rather than relying on its name. In popularity terms it has slipped 14,159 places since August 31, 2026. Links are still being earned (+69.7% in 12 months). On the reputation side: of the 5 most-watched videos whose transcripts I read, 3 are neutral walkthroughs with no verdict and 2 are negative. YouTube gives this brand two year-old critics and three videos with nothing to say: the complaints are about a broken free-tier promise, thin moderation and a hijacked Discord, not about the chat, which even the critics admit they liked. Reddit has one real thread on this brand, and it says the Discord login is technically safe while the Discord itself is somewhere to avoid, which is awkward for a site whose free tier is earned there.

What I expect

The indicators point in different directions, so I expect Sakura to hold roughly where it is: traffic near 114K visits a month and a position around #32 among the sites I track. A sustained rise in brand searches is the signal that would lift it. 8 of its 8 closest search rivals currently get more US search traffic than it does, which is the gap to watch.

  • Whether the Tranco rank keeps the direction it showed over the last 30 days.

Part 7 · Method

How I measured all this

I bought a Sakura membership and tested it myself, and I come at the write-up as a data researcher. Everything on this page is measured, because the whole point of this site is to rank AI girlfriend platforms by real usage and interest rather than by anyone’s taste, and every brand page uses the same indicators in the same order so they can be compared. I pulled every figure on October 7, 2026.

Traffic, keywords, backlinks, competitors, WHOIS
From DataForSEO, refreshed monthly. “Organic traffic” is an estimate of visits from Google results, modelled from the keywords a site ranks for. It leaves out direct visits, app traffic, paid ads and social referrals, so the real audience is bigger; that is why I also show an all-traffic popularity rank.
Brand search volume
Google Ads keyword data via DataForSEO. Google rounds these into bands, which is why months often repeat the same figure.
Domain Rating
Domain Rating by Ahrefs, a 100-point measure of backlink strength, published under Ahrefs’ Domain Rating license. The DataForSEO domain rank is a separate 100-point backlink score.
Popularity rank
The Tranco list, an academic ranking of the top million domains built from DNS and browser data; a rank, not a visit count. The Chrome UX Report tier is Google's own popularity bucket from real Chrome users.
Trends, videos, forums, press, search suggestions
Google Trends is relative interest on a 0 to 100 scale, not a count. News, YouTube, Reddit and autocomplete data come through SerpApi from public Google and YouTube results; video views are summed across the videos I found. For the most-watched videos I also pull the caption transcript through SerpApi, read it in full, and write a short account of what the video says plus my own conclusion; videos without captions are listed by title only. For Reddit I read each thread Google surfaces directly from reddit.com in a browser, record its upvotes, comment count and top comments as they stood that day, screenshot the post as it is publicly visible, and classify it after reading; threads with no analysis yet are listed by title. Press articles are read in full and classified the same way; pages that block automated readers are marked as unread. The category search check is a live Google result for the category's own term (United States, desktop) via DataForSEO. Discord counts come from the server's public invite page.
Hands-on testing
I purchased a Sakura membership and used the product myself: chat, memory, images and the paid extras. My own test tells me what each feature does; the verdict on each feature comes from what users publish, because for a brand this size their view is more grounded than one reviewer's.
Rounding and independence
Figures are rounded for display; charts show the exact values. Top AI Girlfriends is not affiliated with DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SerpApi, Google, or Sakura.

Part 8 · Final verdict

One last word on Sakura

Sakura is an anime character-chat site that is better at writing than at running a company, and after a month with it I rate the product higher than its reputation. The characters stay in voice, the persona editor is the quickest I have used, voice comes free, the Discord path makes the free tier genuinely unlimited, and about 20,000 App Store ratings averaging 4.8 agree with me. The one serious review, from Plisio in June 2026, reaches the same verdict: well worth trying, and trying for free. Users' views are thin here because the brand's keyword is shared with a drink, a song and a cloud company, so my test carries more of this verdict than I would like.

The trade-off is trust, and the critics are right about the shape of it even where I disagree with their conclusions. The free cap arrived after a promise it never would, a bot's age can be edited past the adult-content rule, bugs sit unfixed in a Discord that was hijacked a year ago by someone claiming the owners sold data, the Android app has been pulled from the store at least once, and the iOS app has not been updated since May 2024. None of that is a breach and none of it is a scam; all of it is a two-person company that has not told its users what happened. The praise is about the writing; the complaints are about everything around it.

Who should pick it: anime fans who chat in bursts, want a deep library of user-made characters and a creator that takes a paragraph, will spend an hour on Discord quests for unlimited free chat, and are happy with text and voice. Who should not: anyone who wants images without paying $39 a month, explicit adult roleplay, a companion that remembers last week, or a company with a security page they can read.

Where it stands today: #32 of the AI girlfriend sites I track, mixed on my scorecard, with traffic recovering on earned links and a community that stayed through a rough 2024 and a brand query, 'sakura ai', that held between 27,100 and 40,500 US searches a month all year. If the referring-domain count resumes climbing and the brand query holds its 33,100 average, the recovery is real; if the brand ships a security statement and an iOS update, I would move it up; if another incident lands in that Discord, the App Store rating is the number to watch next.
