What Ahrefs is

Ahrefs runs AhrefsBot, one of the most active web crawlers in existence. Outside the search engines themselves, very few organisations crawl the web at this scale: the crawler visits billions of pages a day and feeds a link index measured in trillions of links, refreshed continuously. That index is the basis of Domain Rating, a score from 0 to 100 that describes how strong a domain's backlink profile is compared with every other domain Ahrefs knows about.

Domain Rating is logarithmic, not linear. Moving from 20 to 30 is ordinary; moving from 70 to 80 is not. That property is what makes it useful in a category where a new site can buy a hundred thousand links in a month and still not move its score much.

We take Domain Rating and nothing else from Ahrefs. Every other figure on this site comes from DataForSEO, Tranco, Google or the sites themselves.

Why we rely on it

  • Ahrefs owns its crawler and its index rather than licensing someone else's, and AhrefsBot is consistently listed among the most active crawlers on the web by independent traffic reports.
  • The index is rebuilt constantly rather than refreshed in occasional snapshots, so a link that disappears is reflected within days.
  • Domain Rating has been in the field for over a decade and is one of the most widely understood link metrics in the industry, which makes it comparable across sites and across time.
  • The score is computed from a published definition rather than being a black-box quality judgment, so two sites with the same score are genuinely comparable on links.

What we take from it

Domain Rating
A 0 to 100 measure of backlink strength, shown on every brand profile, in the comparison tables and in the industry report's leaders section. It is the single figure we use to tell a domain with real authority from one that has just appeared.

What it cannot tell us

  • It measures links, not quality, traffic or whether a product is any good. A site can have a high Domain Rating and a poor chat.
  • It can be inflated. Bought links move it, and when we see a link profile that looks purchased we say so on the brand page rather than treating the score at face value.
  • A rating of zero can mean a new domain rather than a bad one.
Attribution and licence. Domain Rating is taken from Ahrefs' free public endpoint and is always shown as “Domain Rating by Ahrefs”, as that endpoint's terms require. We do not show any other Ahrefs metric.
