What Reddit is
Reddit is where people complain about a subscription they already pay for. For this category that makes it the most useful written source there is: the threads are unsponsored, the votes show whether a view is shared, and the comments usually contain the specific failure the marketing page avoids.
We read the threads directly in a browser rather than through a summary, capture the post score, the comment count and the top comments as they stand that day, and save a screenshot of the post so you can see the same thing we saw. Where a post is age-gated and cannot be shown, we keep the text and say why there is no screenshot.
Why we rely on it
- It is unsponsored and unprompted: people post because something annoyed or impressed them, not because a brand asked.
- Votes and comment counts are a rough measure of whether others recognise the experience, which is more than a single review can offer.
- It is a primary source we can show you. The screenshot on the page is the evidence, not our paraphrase of it.
What we take from it
- Threads about each brand
- The discussions Google surfaces for the brand, read in full with their top comments.
- Votes and comments
- Shown next to each thread, so a complaint with 400 upvotes reads differently from one with two.
- Screenshots
- A capture of the post as it appeared on the day we read it.
- The balance of opinion
- Each thread is classified as positive, mixed, neutral or negative after reading, and the page records where we disagree with the consensus.
What it cannot tell us
- Vote counts are deliberately fuzzed by Reddit, so treat them as a scale rather than an exact figure.
- Threads about something else with the same name are everywhere in this category, and we drop them rather than counting them.
- Age-gated posts cannot be screenshotted by a logged-out reader, so those are quoted as text with a note.
- A subreddit run by the brand is not independent, and we say when a thread is the company's own.
