What Google Chrome UX Report is

The Chrome User Experience Report is Google's public dataset of how real Chrome users experience the web. Alongside its performance metrics it publishes a monthly popularity ranking of the top million origins, grouped into magnitude tiers: the top 1,000, the top 5,000, the top 10,000, and so on down to the top million.

We read the tiers from the openly licensed crux-top-lists mirror, which republishes the ranking from Google's BigQuery dataset in a form that can be downloaded without a cloud account.

Why we rely on it

  • The data comes from real Chrome users who opted into usage reporting, so it reflects actual browsing rather than a model.
  • It is Google's own measurement, published openly and on a fixed monthly schedule.
  • Because it is produced independently of Tranco, agreement between the two is a genuine cross-check, and disagreement is a flag worth looking into.

What we take from it

Popularity tier
The band each site falls into, shown on its profile and on the sites list next to the Tranco rank.
A sanity check
When a site's Tranco rank and its Chrome tier tell different stories, we say so rather than picking the flattering one.

What it cannot tell us

  • The tiers are deliberately coarse. A site in the top 500,000 could be anywhere inside that band.
  • It measures Chrome users who share usage data, so browser mix matters at the margins.
  • It is monthly, so it lags a fast-moving site by a few weeks.
