JOI

An AI girlfriend site: what it offers, what people say, and the numbers.

I bought a JOI membership and tested it myself. Then I built a data-tracked profile of joi.com, refreshed monthly. Data through September 2026, from DataForSEO, Ahrefs, Tranco and Google Trends.

I bought a JOI membership and tested it myself, feature by feature. I’m an AI girlfriend enthusiast and a data researcher, and both shape every page on this site: my own test tells me what the product does, but I don’t grade JOI on my feel alone.

I weigh what its users publish, and I track it the way an analyst tracks a market, with a fixed set of indicators that show how big a platform is, whether it is growing or fading, and how it compares with every other AI girlfriend site I follow.

This page answers three questions in order: what you get, what people are saying, and what the numbers show. Part 1 comes from my own paid test and JOI’s feature list and pricing, Part 2 from the videos, Reddit threads and press I read in full, and Parts 3 and 4 from traffic and search data. That is also how I rank the best AI girlfriend sites: tested first-hand, then judged by what users say and by the numbers.

Part 1 · What it offers

What JOI offers

JOI (joi.com) is an safe-for-work AI girlfriend platform: you create or pick a companion and talk to it, with AI-generated images on top of text chat. I bought a membership and tested it myself; this is what it offers, and Part 2 is what users say about each part of it.

Part 2 · What people say

What people say about JOI

I bought a membership and tested JOI myself, but I don’t take my own word for it. Many users have a more grounded view of a platform this popular than one reviewer can, and I would rather not give it too much or too little credit from my own intent, so I treat what users publish and ask as the main signal for how the brand, and each of its features, is regarded. On October 7, 2026 I found 10 YouTube videos with 25,289 views between them, 1 Reddit threads that Google surfaces, and 6 news articles in the last year. I did not stop at the titles: I read 6 video transcripts (7,142 words), 1 threads with their top comments and 6 articles in full, and classified each one as positive, mixed, neutral or negative.

Favourability at a glance

Each item was classified after I read it, not from its title. A walkthrough or a passing mention counts as neutral.

In one line: YouTube videos 50% positive, 0 negative of 6; Reddit threads 100% positive, 0 negative of 1; Press articles 33% positive, 0 negative of 6. The gap between YouTube videos and Press articles on one side and Reddit on the other is the main sentiment finding on this page, and the sections below explain it.

Each feature, and what people think of it

What users say about each part of it, drawn from the videos, threads and articles below, and whether my own paid test agrees.

FeatureVerdictWhat people say
Chat and roleplayMixedThe first days are where the praise is: all four product videos and the one Reddit thread say it stays in character and adapts to your tone. The same channel's review of user reviews and the Reddit post both report repetition and memory slips in longer roleplay after a few weeks. My test: Agree. The early sessions were as good as the videos say; past week two I had to switch models or rewrite the character to keep it fresh.
Model switchingPositiveThe feature the comparison video builds its verdict on: switching between several AI models mid-conversation, each with a different tone and emotional range, something Candy AI cannot do. The London Daily News advertorial lists it as one of three standouts. My test: Agree. This is the reason to pick Joi over its rivals; a flat conversation came back to life when I changed model without restarting.
MemoryMixedThe explainer calls long-term character memory 'impressively consistent'; the review of a hundred user reviews says memory 'feels very short' once the honeymoon ends, the Reddit post reports 'slight memory slips' in long roleplay, and even the advertorial admits memory can be limited on free tiers and promises stronger memory on the roadmap. My test: Partly disagree with the 'impressively consistent' claim. It held a detail across a session and a few days in my test, then older details slipped.
Images and Dream ClipsMixedPraised in the advertorials and in two videos for staying consistent with the character, but the comparison video is blunt: Candy's photorealistic images and two-minute videos win comfortably against Joi's more stylised output and short Dream Clips that can look jittery. One article concedes artefacts such as extra fingers, and the Terms price a video view at up to 1,900 neurons. My test: Agree. Fine for anime and stylised characters, a step behind Candy for realism; the clips are a few seconds of motion and the most expensive thing on the site per use.
VoiceMixedSplit verdict: the comparison video calls Joi's voices more natural than Candy's, with little delay on calls, while the same channel's short review says other apps edge it on realistic voice and the explainer calls voice 'still maturing'. The Mashable story says the company is building guided voice sessions. Voice calls draw about 2,000 neurons per five minutes. My test: Disagree with the 'more natural' claim. Voice was the weakest part of my month: usable, flatter than the best in the category, and too expensive in neurons to use often.
Characters and customisationPositiveThe most consistent praise across every source: deep control over personality, behaviour, backstory and chat style (all 4 product videos), plus a library spanning anime and cartoon styles, K-pop idols and fantasy characters (2 videos) and, per the press, celebrity twins (2 articles). The caveat is that extra custom characters cost around 1,000 neurons each.My test: Agree. The editor is the deepest I have used in this category; the first custom character is free and the second is where the neurons start.
Free tierNegativeA small neuron balance, a few free images and limited messages on the basic models; adult content and the better models need Premium. The advertorial concedes memory is limited on the free tier and the explainer says heavy daily users need a paid plan.My test: Agree. Enough to see the character library and the chat style, not enough to judge the images or the models the reviewers praise.
Price and neuronsNegativeThe point three of the four product videos make: a subscription that still asks for neurons for images, clips, voice and gifts (3 videos). The fine-print review lists 4 neurons per message read, up to 120 per photo and up to 1,900 per video; packs run from about $12 for 500.My test: Agree on the complaint, partly disagree on the scale: the annual plan is cheap and the monthly allowance covered my chat and a modest number of images; it is voice and clips that empty the balance.
Privacy and billingMixedThe walkthrough calls it '100% private'; the Terms read differently. The policy review found a chargeback clause allowing the company to disclose private conversations, deletion that may lag, and a 14-day case-by-case refund window. The company says it does not sell personal data.My test: Disagree with 'completely private'. Chats are stored and can be produced in a billing dispute; cancelling was a single toggle in my test.
Safety and legitimacyMixedA real company with a help centre, published Terms and refund policy and a 105,000-member Discord; the advertorials answer 'is it legit' with yes. Against that: no disclosed operator or address on the site, a Terms document that still describes a safe-for-work service, and a brand name shared with a film character and an acronym. My test: Partly agree. It is a working, paid-for product that did what it said; the missing company details and the stale Terms are loose ends I would want tidied before trusting it with a year's subscription.

How I read this

Sentiment is the hardest thing to measure honestly. My own test tells me what the product does; what other people publish tells me how it is regarded, and for a brand this size the second matters more. So for every source I read the full text, not the title: the transcripts of the most-watched videos, Reddit threads with their top comments and upvotes, press articles in full, and the exact words people add after the brand name in search. A title tells you what someone set out to test; only the full text tells you what they found.

The most-watched videos, and what they actually say

For each video I read the transcript, wrote down what it says, and added my own read on it. Most viewed first.

  • Joi AI Review: I tested it so you don't have toAI Girlfriend Decoded · 6mo ago · 5:13 · 6.8K views

Mixed · what the video says

Not a hands-on test but a reading of 'over a hundred' user reviews. The pattern it finds: new users rave about natural, fast conversation and an AI that seems to learn, then after weeks the same people complain of repetitive loops and a memory that 'feels very short'. The loudest complaint is money: a premium subscription that still needs neurons to unlock features, and characters that ask for gifts bought with real money, which one user called being 'ripped off at every opportunity'. It concludes Joi suits a 'creative controller' who wants a sandbox, not someone after a deep emotional bond or on a tight budget. Three 20% discount plugs make it an affiliate piece.

My read: The most useful of the affiliate videos, and I mostly agree. My first week matched the rave; by the third the lines repeated unless I switched models or rewrote the character, which is the arc it describes. Where I partly disagree is the budget line: the annual plan is cheap, and it is voice and clips, not chat, that drain the neurons.

  • Joi AI Review – I tested it so you don't have toAI Girlfriend Decoded · 6mo ago · 3:07 · 5.6K views

Positive · what the video says

A three-minute first-person pitch from the same channel. Most AI girlfriend apps, it says, break the illusion within ten minutes through bad memory, scripted replies or an invisible filter; Joi stood out for being less restricted and, above all, for how much control you get: personality traits, behaviour patterns, pacing and how scenarios unfold, so the character slowed down and built things up when asked. It also praises the images as sharp, consistent and matching the character you are talking to. The caveats: other apps edge it on ultra-realistic voice, and replies can lag at busy times. It calls Joi top of its list and ends with a 20% discount link.

My read: Agree on control, partly disagree on the images. The character editor is the deepest in the category and the reason to pick Joi. The pictures do stay consistent with the character, as it says, but 'sharp' flatters them: stylised rather than lifelike, and the same channel's comparison video concedes Candy wins on realism.

  • Joi AI vs Candy AI: Which Is Better?AI Girlfriend Decoded · 2mo ago · 8:07 · 4.8K views

Positive · what the video says

A round-by-round comparison with Candy AI. Candy wins visuals: more photorealistic images, a face that stays consistent, and clips up to two minutes, against Joi's shorter Dream Clips that can look jittery, though Joi has more anime and cartoon variety. Joi wins conversation because you can switch between several language models mid-chat, including a 'Mars' model built for long roleplay, and it mirrors the energy of your messages, with the caveat that switching can subtly change the personality. Joi also wins voice, with more natural rhythm and little delay on calls, and customisation. Both pair a subscription with a currency; neither is unlimited. Overall winner for companionship: Joi, 'by a narrow margin'.

My read: Right on the split, wrong on voice. Model switching is the real differentiator and it rescued flat conversations for me more than once; the warning that a new model shifts the personality matches what I saw. Here I disagree on voice: Joi's calls were serviceable, not ahead of Candy's, and they burn neurons fast enough that I used them sparingly.

  • Joi AI Review: The Boldest & Most Entertaining AI Character Chat PlatformQUASA · 4mo ago · 8:21 · 3.7K views

Positive · what the video says

A scripted 'explainer' that opens on the $2,000-a-month 'masturbation consultant' job posting and calls Joi 'the anti-dating app': no ghosting, no judgement, full creative control. It lists hundreds of original characters, from empathetic listeners and playful doms to fantasy elves and K-pop idols, a custom character creator, on-character photo and short video generation, daily guided sessions with voice-guided audio, and an environment it calls '100% private and safe'. The downsides it allows: advanced video and voice are 'still maturing', heavy daily users will need a paid plan, and results depend on your prompting. It scores Joi 4.7 out of 5 and plugs a reward token for visiting the host's own platform.

My read: A promotional piece, and I disagree with two of its claims. 4.7 out of 5 only holds if you ignore the neuron bill, which it never names. And '100% private' sits badly next to the Terms, which let the company disclose conversations to contest a chargeback; chats are stored, not sealed. Its 'impressively consistent long-term memory' lasted weeks, not months, for me.

Neutral, no verdict · what the video says

Not about this brand. A two-year-old tutorial on getting an AI chatbot to write 'JOI' scripts, the acronym the site later took as its name; the product on screen is Candy AI, with an affiliate link in the description. It predates joi.com's relaunch and reviews nothing. It surfaces in this search only because of the name, a recurring problem for a brand that chose a term with an established meaning. I keep it so the view counts above are honest, but it carries no weight in my verdict.

My read: Ignore it for the product; note it for the name. The clip is a reminder that 'joi' had an audience long before the company did, and that some of the brand's search demand is people typing the acronym, not the brand. That matters when I read the brand search numbers below.

Neutral, no verdict · what the video says

Not about this brand either. A sixteen-minute screen recording of a different 'Joi' product: a crypto trading agent, demonstrated on a virtual Monad network, that creates wallets, buys USDC and Monad, fires swaps from TradingView webhooks, pays contacts from an address book and deposits into the company's own DeFi vaults. Uploaded two years ago by its developers; no companion, no chat character, no pricing. It is a name collision, like the tutorial above, and I include it only because it sits in the result set a newcomer searching 'joi ai' will see.

My read: Zero weight, but a useful warning. Two of the six videos with transcripts are about something else entirely, so the real review base for this brand is four videos, three carrying affiliate discount links and the fourth reading like a sponsored script. I read the praise with that in mind.

What the videos add up to

Reading across the 6 transcripts, this is the picture that emerges.

Of the 6 most-watched videos whose transcripts I read, 3 are positive, 1 is mixed, 2 are neutral walkthroughs with no verdict and none is negative.

Four of the six videos with transcripts are about this product, and they agree on what it is good at. Deep control over personality, behaviour and backstory (all 4), a conversation that adapts to you rather than reading from a script (all 4, though one says only for the first weeks), images that stay on character (2), and the ability to switch AI models mid-chat (the comparison video), which gives Joi the win for talking while Candy wins for looking.

The caveats repeat from every angle: a subscription that still needs neurons for images, video, voice or gifts (3 of the 4), replies that loop and memory that shortens after a few weeks (the review of user reviews), visuals that trail Candy and clips that jitter (the comparison), and lag at busy times (1). The videos disagree with each other on voice: the comparison calls Joi's voices more natural than Candy's, while the same channel's short review and the explainer say other apps edge it and the feature is still maturing.

Three of the four carry a 20% discount link and the fourth reads like a sponsored script, so there is no independent video review of this brand yet. The other two videos are name collisions, a crypto agent demo and a two-year-old tutorial about the acronym, which tells me the brand's name is doing some of its search work for it.

What gets praised

  • Deep control over personality, behaviour and backstory (all 4 product videos)
  • Conversation adapts to your tone and pace rather than reading from a script (4 videos, one only for the first weeks)
  • Switching AI models mid-chat, including a model built for long roleplay (the comparison video)
  • Images that stay consistent with the character (2 videos)
  • Character library spanning realistic, anime and cartoon styles, K-pop idols and fantasy characters (2 videos)

What gets criticised

  • Neurons on top of the subscription for images, video, voice and gifts (3 videos)
  • Replies loop and memory feels short after a few weeks (1 video, citing user reviews)
  • Voice trails the best apps and is 'still maturing' (2 videos); the comparison video disagrees
  • Images and clips trail Candy AI on realism and length (1 video)
  • Replies lag at busy times (1 video)

What Reddit says, thread by thread

The threads Google surfaces for "joi ai" on Reddit, read with their top comments. Upvotes and comment counts as they stood on October 7, 2026; most upvoted first. Screenshots show the post as it is publicly visible.

What Reddit adds up to

Reading across the 1 threads, weighted by upvotes.

Of the 1 threads I read, 1 is positive and none is negative.

One thread survived the relevance filter, and it is a review-shaped post with four upvotes in a small NSFW subreddit. Every other thread the search returned used 'joi' in its older sense. For a brand with 27,000 US searches a month and a 105,000-member Discord, that is a thin Reddit footprint.

What the one thread says matches YouTube: immersive, stays in character, adapts to tone, with small repetitions and memory slips in longer roleplay. I cannot build a sentiment count from one post, so I weight it as a single data point that happens to agree with the videos and my test.

The brand's own community lives on Discord, not Reddit. That is where feature questions and complaints go, and it is also where the company can moderate. Public, searchable criticism of this brand is scarce, which cuts both ways: no pile-on, but also no independent check.

What gets praised

  • Stays in character and adapts to your tone (the one thread)
  • More immersive than other 2026 platforms the poster tried (the one thread)
  • Enough context for short and mid-length sessions (the one thread)

What gets criticised

  • Small repetitions in longer roleplays (the one thread)
  • Slight memory slips in longer roleplays (the one thread)
  • Almost no organic Reddit discussion to check the praise against (the search itself)

In the press

The latest articles that mention JOI, newest first. For each one: what it says, then my take on its view of the brand.

  • Get paid $2,000 a month to be a Joi AI 'masturbation consultant'Mashable · May 29, 2026

Neutral · what the article says

Coverage of a recruitment stunt: Joi advertised for ten 'masturbation consultants' at $2,000 each to test a Daily Guided Masturbation feature built on mood-matched AI voice sessions for four weeks. It quotes head of brand Julie Levin confirming the role is real, notes the Google Form application, and reports over 103,000 applications by late May 2026. The tone is amused; there is no assessment of the product.

My take: Not a review, but it explains the May spike in brand searches further down this page. I agree with Mashable's implicit read: this is marketing, and it worked. It also tells you the company's positioning is explicitly sexual, whatever its Terms say.

  • Joi AI Review: A Character-Chat Platform Built Around Safety, Subscriptions, and “Neurons”The Solihull Observer · February 18, 2026

Mixed · what the article says

A review built from the published Terms, Safety page and Privacy Policy rather than a test. It records the subscription plus 'Neurons' model, with unit costs of 4 neurons to read a message, up to 120 per photo and up to 1,900 per video, a 14-day refund window, data deletion that may lag, and a chargeback clause allowing the company to disclose private conversations. Oddly, it reads the Terms as describing a strictly safe-for-work service that prohibits sexual content.

My take: The most useful article here for the fine print, and the one I disagree with on the product: the site I tested is explicitly adult, with NSFW as the headline, so the SFW Terms it quotes are either stale or for a different storefront. The chargeback clause is real and worth knowing.

  • Joi AI Review Guide: What It Is, Who It’s For, and How to Evaluate It Safelyxflnewshub.com · February 2, 2026

Neutral · what the article says

A generic 'how to evaluate adult AI chat safely' guide on a football news site that uses 'Joi AI' as shorthand for the whole category rather than reviewing the product. It offers a five-part rubric (consent, privacy, cost predictability, moderation, autonomy), a conceptual risk map that puts cost escalation and oversharing at the top, and advice on timers and privacy. No feature, price or test of Joi itself appears.

My take: Sensible advice, zero information about this brand. Its warning that cost scales with per-feature monetisation applies to Joi's neurons, but the article does not know that; it is a placeholder with a brand name in the title.

  • Blade Runner 2049’s Joi AI companion closer to becoming realityAaj English TV · January 23, 2026

Neutral · what the article says

A technology feature on how close the industry is to Joi, the holographic companion from Blade Runner 2049, surveying Razer's Project AVA, Lepro's Ami device, Replika and Character.AI, and VR companion apps. It does not mention the Joi AI company at all; the match is the name. The brand chose the film character's name deliberately, and this article is what that choice attracts in a news search.

My take: Unrelated to the product, relevant to the brand strategy. The autocomplete for 'joi ai' is 'joi ai blade runner', so a share of the people searching the name are after the film, not the site. I would not count them as demand.

  • Beyond OnlyFans: Joi AI Review of How AI Companions Are Changing Online DesireOCNJ Daily · December 18, 2025

Positive · what the article says

Labelled 'Imported', which is the site's tag for supplied content. The writer frames Joi against OnlyFans and dating apps as a judgement-free space, and praises customisable characters, chat styles (default, deep roleplay, creative, realistic), image-to-clip animation and the Celebrity Twins feature. It says the AI retains knowledge of previous conversations and improves over time, and that the platform deepens a user's relationship with their own sexuality. No prices, no caveats.

My take: An advertorial. The feature list is accurate, including the chat styles and the celebrity twins, but a review with no caveats is not a review. I agree the customisation is the strength; I did not find memory that improves over time, it holds and then slips.

  • The rise of AI-lationships: Why digital companions like Joi AI are the future of intimacyLondon Daily News · October 17, 2025

Positive · what the article says

An explainer of 'AI-lationships' that reads as brand-supplied: it introduces Joi as the platform for rejection-free companionship and lists image and video generation, multiple selectable AI models, and celebrity twins plus licensed characters as its three standouts. It answers 'is Joi legit' with yes, and concedes that memory can be limited on free tiers and that images sometimes show artefacts such as extra fingers, while promising stronger memory on the roadmap.

My take: Advertorial, but it admits two things the videos also found: limited memory and image artefacts. I agree with both; the multi-model switching is the feature I would lead with too. 'Licensed characters' I could not verify on the site.

What the press adds up to

Reading across the 6 articles I could open.

Of the 6 articles I read, 2 are positive, 1 is mixed, 3 are neutral and none is negative.

Of six articles, two are advertorials that praise the product, one is a policy read-through that finds the fine print, one covers a recruitment stunt, and two are not about this company at all (a Blade Runner feature and a generic safety rubric). There is no independent hands-on review in the press.

The facts that survive: the product is explicitly adult with celebrity twins, selectable AI models, image and clip generation; the pricing is a subscription plus neurons with per-message, per-photo and per-video costs; refunds are case by case within 14 days; and the Terms allow the company to disclose chats to contest a chargeback. The advertorials concede limited memory on free tiers and image artefacts.

The name is a liability in the press as much as an asset in search. Two of the six results are about the film character or the acronym, and the one serious policy review thinks the service is safe-for-work. A brand this new should own its own search results, and it does not yet.

What gets praised

  • Deep character customisation and chat styles (2 articles)
  • Selectable AI models and celebrity twins (2 articles)
  • Image and short video generation (2 articles)
  • Judgement-free, rejection-free framing (2 articles)

What gets criticised

  • Neurons on top of the subscription, with per-photo and per-video costs (1 article)
  • Chargeback clause allowing disclosure of private chats (1 article)
  • Memory limited on free tiers and image artefacts (1 article)
  • No independent review; two of the six articles are advertorials and two are unrelated (my count)

What people type into Google before they sign up

Google's own suggestions after "joi ai" and the related searches Google Trends ranks highest over the last 12 months, retrieved October 7, 2026.

These are the questions people have before they sign up, in their own words. I group them by what they tell me, because the mix says more than any single search: a brand searched mostly with “free” has a different audience from one searched with “review”.

Google Trends “rising” related queries; “Breakout” means growth over 5,000%.

My take

The name does the heavy lifting, and not all of it is the brand's. The site ranks #1 for 'joi', a 135,000-a-month term that meant something else before the company existed, and only #5 for 'joi ai', its own name. The one autocomplete suggestion is 'joi ai blade runner'. So part of the 27,100 monthly 'joi ai' searches are people after the film character or the acronym, and I read the brand volume as inflated by ambiguity.

What people want before they sign up is the adult use, not the girlfriend. The site's non-brand rankings are 'ai sexting' (#2), 'adult ai' (#7), 'nsfw image generator' (#8) and 'sex chat' (#48 on a 550,000-a-month term), and the top related Trends queries are 'ai chat', 'joi com' and 'joi app'. The 4,400 monthly 'joi app' searches tell me people expect a mobile app; I used it in the browser.

Every rising query is a rival: darlink ai, secrets ai, xotic ai, playbox ai and eternal ai are all 'Breakout' next to this brand. That is comparison shopping by people who have heard of Joi through its advertising and are checking the alternatives, and with Trends at 33 against the May peak of 100, the stunt-driven attention has not turned into steady demand yet.

Part 3 · Traffic rank and reach

How much traffic JOI gets, and where it ranks

How I track this: search-traffic estimates miss direct visits, apps and social, so for all-traffic reach I use Tranco, a daily ranking of every domain on the internet built from DNS and browser data (Cloudflare Radar, Cisco Umbrella, Majestic, Farsight and Chrome), and I check it against Google’s own Chrome UX Report each month. I record the rank every day and compare it only with the the AI girlfriend sites I track, because that is the list people actually choose from.

On the Tranco list of October 6, 2026, joi.com ranked #31,348 among every domain worldwide, up 5,318 places since August 31, 2026, and Chrome's data puts it in the top 50,000 most visited sites. Among the AI girlfriend sites I track, that makes it #19, behind Linky and HiWaifu.

How I read this

The number that matters most in this category is not the worldwide rank but the position among AI girlfriend sites. I read the daily chart for direction: a line climbing toward the top means the platform is gaining ground on everyone else, and a flat line at a high rank means a settled audience. Tranco is a rank, not a visit count, so I never convert it into visits.

How I read this

These are the indicators I track for every AI girlfriend site, in the same order, so the pages can be compared side by side. Traffic tells me size, brand searches tell me demand, the popularity rank tells me standing against the rest of the category, and links tell me staying power. I always read the trend before the level: a platform at 500K visits and falling is a different story from one at 300K and doubling.

My take: the story in the numbers

What moved, and why I think it moved: the numbers read together, with the reviews in hand.

This is an eighteen-month-old site on a twenty-year-old domain. joi.com was registered in 2003 and had no measurable search traffic until April 2025, when the brand moved onto it. From there the line is steep: 1,800 visits in May 2025, 16,000 in August, 50,000 in October, and a peak of 167,000 in March 2026. Referring domains went from 117 to 2,966 over the same stretch. That is a launch funded by marketing, not a slow organic build.

The spring spike was a ranking event, and the collapse was too. Traffic fell from 167,000 in March to 36,000 in May, a 78% drop, while brand searches rose every month from 27,100 to 49,500. When demand climbs and visits fall, Google moved the site, not the audience. The US series shows what moved: 34,800 in March to 5,000 in April. The site's non-brand rankings are generic adult terms, 'sex chat' at 550,000 a month, 'ai sexting', 'nsfw image generator', and those positions swing. My read is that it briefly ranked for a basket of generic adult queries in February and March and lost most of them in April.

May's demand spike has a name and a date. Brand searches jumped to 49,500 in May and Google Trends hit its 12-month peak in the week of 24 May, which is when the $2,000 'masturbation consultant' posting went round Decrypt, Mashable and X with 103,000 applications. June fell straight back to 27,100. A stunt buys a month; it does not change the base. The base did move though: August's 33,100 is more than double September 2025's 14,800.

Some of that brand volume is not the brand. 'joi' is an acronym with a long history and a Blade Runner character, the site ranks #1 for the bare word and only #5 for 'joi ai', and the autocomplete is 'joi ai blade runner'. I discount the headline 90,500 worldwide figure for that reason. The number I trust more is Tranco, which measures all traffic: the rank improved from 36,666 to 31,348 in five weeks, so visitors are arriving by ads, Discord and direct, not only search.

The link profile has the affiliate signature. Backlinks climbed from 159 to 78,000 in seventeen months while referring domains grew to under 3,000, then backlinks fell 20% in two months to 62,000 as domains kept rising. A few sites linking from every page, then one of them dropping the placement: that is affiliate and sitewide links, which fits the discount codes in three of the four product videos. The 105,000-member Discord is the more impressive community number, and it is one the company controls.

Verdict: growing fast from a small base, with a volatile traffic line. Brand searches are up 124% year on year, referring domains have more than doubled, Tranco is improving, and traffic is up 16% year on year yet 80% below its own March peak. The things people praise, control and model switching, do not show up in search; the things they warn about, neurons and the fade after week two, show up in churn. The two risks I would watch are the rival names breaking out in Trends and whether the generic adult rankings come back; if they do, the March number repeats, and if they do not, the site settles around 35,000 to 50,000 visits on brand demand alone.

The shape is the story: a 82% fall between March 2026 and August 2026, then a climb back to 20% of the old peak by September 2026. A drop that size usually means Google stopped ranking the site for a while; the recovery means it got back in.

In short

What I learned, and what I expect next

Pulling it together, from my own paid test, from what users say, and from my indicators: JOI is growing right now. Here is the whole picture in a few lines, then the scorecard behind it.

How it is performing

JOI drew an estimated 34,016 visits from Google search in September 2026, +10.6% on August 2026 and +16.0% on a year earlier. The year-on-year figure flatters it because it is measured against the August 2026 low; against the March 2026 peak it is at 20%. Over the last quarter the trend is slipping (-52.4% against the three months before). Counting all traffic, it is #19 among the AI girlfriend sites I track, behind Linky and HiWaifu.

Reading the trend with the reviews in hand: the traffic line is a launch curve with one spike taken away, and the demand underneath it keeps rising on advertising, a stunt and a big Discord rather than on reviews, because there are no independent reviews yet. What people praise, the character editor and switching models mid-chat, is the kind of thing that keeps subscribers; what they warn about, neurons for anything beyond text and the fade after the second week, is what sends them to the rival names now breaking out in Trends. The number to check next month is 'joi ai' against those rivals: brand searches have held above 27,000 since March, and if they slip while darlink and secrets keep rising, the marketing has stopped paying for itself.

What changed

Brand demand is the standout: about 33,100 US searches a month (+123.6% year on year) and 90,500 worldwide. Demand and traffic are rising together, which is the healthiest pattern there is. In popularity terms it has climbed 5,318 places since August 31, 2026. Links are still being earned (+157.2% in 12 months). On the reputation side: of the 6 most-watched videos whose transcripts I read, 3 are positive, 1 is mixed, 2 are neutral walkthroughs with no verdict and none is negative. The video reviewers I read praise the control and the mid-chat model switching, three of the four warn about neurons on top of the subscription, and none is independent; two of the six videos are not about this product at all. Reddit barely discusses it: one review-shaped thread agrees with the videos on immersion and on slips in longer roleplay, and the lack of anything else is the real signal.

What I expect

With demand, traffic and links moving the same way, I expect JOI to keep gaining ground over the next few months. The thing that would change my mind is a month-on-month drop that repeats, which is why I refresh these figures monthly. 8 of its 8 closest search rivals currently get more US search traffic than it does, which is the gap to watch.

What I will check next month

  • Whether September 2026’s traffic figure held, rose or fell once the next month is in.
  • Whether US brand searches move out of the 33.1K band they have sat in.
  • Whether the Tranco rank keeps the direction it showed over the last 30 days.
  • Whether the rival names rising next to it in Google Trends (darlink) keep climbing while its own searches hold.

Part 7 · Method

How I measured all this

I bought a JOI membership and tested it myself, and I come at the write-up as a data researcher. Everything on this page is measured, because the whole point of this site is to rank AI girlfriend platforms by real usage and interest rather than by anyone’s taste, and every brand page uses the same indicators in the same order so they can be compared. I pulled every figure on October 7, 2026.

Traffic, keywords, backlinks, competitors, WHOIS
From DataForSEO, refreshed monthly. “Organic traffic” is an estimate of visits from Google results, modelled from the keywords a site ranks for. It leaves out direct visits, app traffic, paid ads and social referrals, so the real audience is bigger; that is why I also show an all-traffic popularity rank.
Brand search volume
Google Ads keyword data via DataForSEO. Google rounds these into bands, which is why months often repeat the same figure.
Domain Rating
Domain Rating by Ahrefs, a 100-point measure of backlink strength, published under Ahrefs’ Domain Rating license. The DataForSEO domain rank is a separate 100-point backlink score.
Popularity rank
The Tranco list, an academic ranking of the top million domains built from DNS and browser data; a rank, not a visit count. The Chrome UX Report tier is Google's own popularity bucket from real Chrome users.
Trends, videos, forums, press, search suggestions
Google Trends is relative interest on a 0 to 100 scale, not a count. News, YouTube, Reddit and autocomplete data come through SerpApi from public Google and YouTube results; video views are summed across the videos I found. For the most-watched videos I also pull the caption transcript through SerpApi, read it in full, and write a short account of what the video says plus my own conclusion; videos without captions are listed by title only. For Reddit I read each thread Google surfaces directly from reddit.com in a browser, record its upvotes, comment count and top comments as they stood that day, screenshot the post as it is publicly visible, and classify it after reading; threads with no analysis yet are listed by title. Press articles are read in full and classified the same way; pages that block automated readers are marked as unread. The category search check is a live Google result for the category's own term (United States, desktop) via DataForSEO. Discord counts come from the server's public invite page.
Hands-on testing
I purchased a JOI membership and used the product myself: chat, memory, images and the paid extras. My own test tells me what each feature does; the verdict on each feature comes from what users publish, because for a brand this size their view is more grounded than one reviewer's.
Rounding and independence
Figures are rounded for display; charts show the exact values. Top AI Girlfriends is not affiliated with DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SerpApi, Google, or JOI.

Part 8 · Final verdict

One last word on JOI

Joi is the loudest newcomer in the category, and after a month with it the product is better than the marketing deserves. The character editor is the deepest I have used, switching AI models mid-conversation is a genuine differentiator no rival I have tested offers, and the chat holds character and tone in the first weeks exactly as the reviewers say. Demand backs it up: 'joi ai' searches more than doubled in a year to 33,100 a month in the US, and the Discord has 105,000 members.

The trade-off is the neuron economy and the fade. The subscription covers chat; images, clips, voice and a second custom character draw on neurons, and the Terms price a photo at up to 120 and a video at up to 1,900. Past the second week the lines start to repeat unless you change model or rewrite the character, which the one honest affiliate video and the one Reddit post both admit. And there is no independent review of it anywhere: the videos carry discount codes, the press is advertorial, and Reddit is silent.

Who should pick it: someone who wants to build a character in detail and talk to it, who will use the model switch, and who is happy with stylised rather than photoreal images. Who should not: anyone choosing on images or video, heavy voice users, anyone who wants a product with a disclosed operator and a tidy Terms page, and anyone who expects the free tier to show them the real thing.

Where it stands today: #19 of the AI girlfriend sites I track, growing fast on brand demand and advertising, with a traffic line 80% below its March peak and a reputation that exists mainly in content the brand paid for. If the rival names breaking out in Trends start to pull 'joi ai' searches down, the verdict turns; until then it is a strong product with a trust gap it has not yet closed.

Every platform I track, tested the same way and ranked by the same indicators.
