HeyReal Review 2026: Is It Any Good? We tested it hands-on.

I built one anime-style companion and one realistic companion through HeyReal's setup flow, which took a couple of minutes and focused mostly on conversation style and personality traits rather than deep visual customization, there's no image to tweak since there's no visual layer at all. I ran both through extended sessions covering casual check-ins, romantic conversation, and explicit exchanges, and the chat adapted naturally each time I shifted the tone, sweet talk stayed sweet, and when I pushed things explicit it followed without feeling like it was fighting the shift or falling back on the same handful of stock lines.

The realistic companion in particular felt more emotionally attentive than I expected from a text-only platform, remembering a detail I'd mentioned about my day several messages later and working it back into the conversation unprompted. Where it lost some points was personality depth over the very longest stretches, the setup flow gives you a starting point more than a deeply written backstory, so a few hours in, the voice settled into something a bit more generic. Response speed held steady throughout, which kept the back-and-forth feeling like an actual conversation rather than a chore.

When I originally tested HeyReal, there was no image generation to find anywhere, no generation button, no gallery, and no way to request or view an image of any kind. Choosing anime or realistic style happened once during setup and shaped how the AI wrote, not anything you saw rendered.

The platform has since added basic in-chat images, with your AI friend occasionally sending a generated selfie or scene image during conversation, though this is described elsewhere as a limited feature rather than a proper generation tool, and I haven't personally tested it since it launched. Video generation, by contrast, is confirmed absent everywhere I checked, with no indication it's coming. If a visual companion matters to you, HeyReal is no longer a purely text-only platform on paper, but it's still a long way from the dedicated image generators built into other platforms in this category.

There's no voice feature to test on HeyReal. I checked the chat composer, the companion settings, and every menu I could find after paying for a subscription, and there's no voice message option and no live voice or video calling feature attached to any companion. The entire experience runs through typed text.

I looked for any roadmap signal suggesting voice might be coming and didn't find one. Combined with the lack of image generation, this makes HeyReal a genuinely narrow platform, everything it does well, it does through text alone, which is fine if that's specifically what you want but a real gap if you're hoping for any multimedia layer to the relationship.

I tested support by emailing support@heyreal.ai with a billing question and separately posting in the platform's Discord server. The email got a reply within about a day, which is a reasonable turnaround for a small team, and the Discord server itself had genuine recent activity, not just an abandoned invite link, with other users chatting and staff visible in the channel. The Twitter account (@HeyRealAI) is also active and posts updates regularly.

What's missing is a dedicated help center or searchable FAQ, so if you have a question outside of what a quick message can resolve, you're relying entirely on a human getting back to you rather than self-serving an answer. Still, having three genuinely working contact channels, email, Discord, and Twitter, puts HeyReal ahead of the platforms I've tested that have nothing more than a single quiet Discord server or no published contact method at all.

HeyReal's entry tier starts at $12.99 a month, which reads as accessible on its own, but the range climbs to $49.99 a month at the top end, and yearly plans run from $46.88 up to $238.88 depending on tier. Where I previously found no free tier or trial message of any kind, the platform now advertises a free plan alongside the paid tiers, which lowers the barrier to trying the chat before committing money.

Set against a feature set that's still mostly text-based, with only basic in-chat images added since my original testing and no voice, the higher paid tiers still start to feel steep. On the plus side, an affiliate program is available for anyone who wants to earn from referrals, which is more than most competitors at this price point offer, though there's no cryptocurrency payment option for anyone who prefers to pay that way.
