Quick answer

Based on our testing of 129 AI girlfriend platforms, the industry breaks down like this: 48% offer a genuine free tier, average starting price is $11.85 a month, and the average overall platform score sits at just 2.5 out of 5. Chat quality is the strongest category at 3.26 out of 5, while voice interaction is the weakest at 1.81 out of 5, with 77% of platforms still lacking functional voice. Only 21% document real cross-session memory, and in a single re-audit pass, at least 23 platforms, about 18%, had gone dark, been sold, or silently rebranded within a year. This page pulls every number from our own testing database into one place, as the single most complete data snapshot of this industry we publish.

This is our data hub: the single article where we bring together every major number from our ongoing testing of the AI girlfriend industry, all pulled from our own live database rather than any outside source. If you're looking for one page to cite, bookmark, or come back to for an accurate read on the state of this category, this is it. Every other data-focused article we publish links back to this page, and this page gets updated as our underlying database changes.

The industry at a glance

We currently track and score 129 AI girlfriend platforms, tested hands-on rather than evaluated from marketing pages alone. Across all of them, the average overall rating comes out to 2.5 out of 5, a number that tells you a lot on its own: this is a real, functioning category with plenty of genuine competition, but it's also one where mediocre execution is still the norm rather than the exception. A handful of platforms score dramatically above that average, and a long tail scores well below it.

How big is this industry, really

129 tested platforms is almost certainly a floor, not a ceiling, on the total size of this category, since new entrants launch regularly and some smaller or shorter-lived platforms never reach the scale where they'd show up in a broad testing sweep in the first place. What we can say with confidence from our own data is that this is not a niche corner of the internet with a handful of players. It's a genuinely crowded, competitive market with real variation in quality, features, and pricing across well over a hundred active products.

That scale also explains why churn is a real factor in this category, which we cover in more detail later on this page. A market this crowded, with this much variation in execution quality, naturally produces a meaningful failure rate among weaker entrants over time.

Pricing across the industry

Pricing is one of the clearest, most quotable numbers we track. Averaged across the 85 platforms in our database with a clearly parseable starting price, the industry-wide average comes out to $11.85 per month. That number sits comfortably in what most people would consider budget-to-mid-range subscription territory, not a luxury purchase.

Looking at how platforms distribute across pricing tiers tells a more complete story than the average alone. Out of all 129 platforms:

16

platforms are genuinely free tier

56

sit in the budget pricing tier

55

sit in the mid-range pricing tier

2

are priced as premium

Only 2 out of 129 platforms charge premium pricing. That's a striking concentration. The category has effectively settled into a budget-to-mid-range consumer subscription model, and pricing much above that middle band appears to actively work against adoption rather than signal extra quality. Separately, 48% of the 129 platforms we've tested offer some kind of genuine free tier, meaning close to half the market can be tried without paying anything upfront, even if the free version typically excludes voice, image generation, or memory features.

Quality scores by category

We score every platform across five categories: chat quality, image generation, voice interaction, customer support, and pricing. Averaged across all 129 platforms, here's exactly how each category currently stands:

3.26/5

chat quality, the strongest category industry-wide

3.30/5

pricing, the highest-scoring category overall

2.21/5

customer support

2.12/5

image generation

1.81/5

voice interaction, the weakest category by a wide margin

2.5/5

overall average across all five categories combined

The gap between the strongest and weakest categories is enormous: pricing at 3.30 and chat at 3.26 are both nearly double voice interaction's 1.81. That gap reflects something structural about this industry, not random variation. Text conversation is the layer every platform has to get right just to exist as a product at all, so it's had the most competitive pressure and the most iteration. Voice requires chaining together speech recognition, reply generation, and speech synthesis fast enough to feel like a real phone call, which is a dramatically harder engineering problem, and most platforms simply haven't made that investment yet.

What platforms actually offer, feature by feature

Marketing pages tend to imply every AI girlfriend app offers a full suite of chat, voice, images, and video. Our testing data tells a much more uneven story:

42%

of platforms have no real image generation feature at all

77%

of platforms still lack functional voice interaction

78%

of platforms have no clearly documented customer support channel

Video generation is the newest and rarest feature layer: only 22% of the 129 platforms we track currently offer any form of AI video generation. Cross-session memory, the ability for a character to accurately recall details from a previous, separate conversation, is documented on just 21% of platforms. Put together, these numbers paint a consistent picture: most AI girlfriend apps are still, at their core, text-chat products, with voice, images, video, and long-term memory as unevenly distributed extras rather than universal standard features.

NSFW vs. SFW: content policy tells you nothing about quality

One of the more surprising findings in our own data: content policy has zero measurable relationship to platform quality. Of the 129 platforms we've tested, 104 allow NSFW content and 25 are SFW-only. Averaged separately, both groups land at exactly 2.5 out of 5, the same as the industry-wide average. Whether a platform allows adult content tells you absolutely nothing about how well-built the underlying product actually is. They're two completely independent variables, and treating "NSFW" as a signal of either higher or lower quality is a mistake we'd caution against based directly on what our own numbers show.

The customer support gap

Customer support is the second-lowest scoring category in our data, at 2.21 out of 5, and the underlying reason is stark: 78% of the 129 platforms we've tested have no clearly documented support channel at all. That's a genuinely significant gap for a category built around ongoing, personal, sometimes sensitive conversations and, in many cases, recurring subscription payments. It's one of the most important things to check before committing to any platform, and it's consistently underweighted by users who focus purely on chat quality or pricing when evaluating an app.

Platform churn: how often apps in this category disappear

This is one of the most important, least discussed numbers in the entire industry. When we ran a full re-audit of every platform in our database, we found that at least 23 of them, about 18%, had either shut down entirely, been sold and rebranded under a new name, or started silently redirecting to an unrelated product, all within about a year of our original testing.

23

platforms confirmed gone dark, sold, or rebranded in one re-audit pass

18%

approximate churn rate across our full database within about a year

129

platforms currently active and tracked in our database

That's a meaningful churn rate for a category where users are trusting a platform with an ongoing, personal chat history, and in a lot of cases, an active subscription. It's a big part of why we date every review with a last-tested timestamp, and why we'd encourage treating any AI girlfriend recommendation you read online, including our own, with an eye toward how recently it was actually verified.

Cryptocurrency payment support

19% of the 129 platforms we've tested accept cryptocurrency as a payment method, a notably high figure for what is, on the surface, a mainstream consumer subscription app category. We read this as a fairly direct signal of how much this industry has had to build around user discretion. A meaningful share of users don't want a companion app subscription showing up by name on a bank or card statement, and platforms have responded to that demand directly.

What "good" actually looks like against these numbers

Numbers are most useful with a concrete reference point. AIGirlfriends.ai, the top-ranked platform in our testing, scores 4.8 out of 5 overall, well above the 2.5 industry average, including 4.7 for chat quality, 4.7 for image generation, and a perfect 5.0 for voice interaction, the category where the rest of the industry struggles most. Its pricing starts at $9.99 a month, with a free tier to start and cryptocurrency accepted, and it combines chat, voice, and image generation in one product rather than treating any single layer as an afterthought.

That gap between AIGirlfriends.ai's scores and the industry averages above is exactly the kind of comparison this data hub exists to make possible: not just "is this app good," but "how good, compared to what, out of how many alternatives we've actually tested." If you want the full, ranked comparison across every platform in our database, our best AI girlfriend rankings apply these same five categories to all 129 platforms side by side.

How we actually collect this data

Every number on this page comes from our own hands-on testing process, not from surveys, not from press releases, and not from any third-party research. We maintain a paid subscription on each of the 129 platforms in our database, run real conversations across multiple sessions, test voice and image features directly where they exist, and score each platform across the same five categories every time: chat quality, image generation, voice interaction, customer support, and pricing. We periodically re-audit the full database to catch platforms that have shut down, changed significantly, or newly launched, which is how we identified the churn figures described above.

You can read our complete testing methodology for the full detail on how scoring works, and more about the process behind it on our author page. If you want to see how any of this data fits into the underlying technology producing it, our technical walkthrough of how these apps work is the right companion piece. And if pricing specifically is what you're trying to understand in more depth, we've broken that number down further in a dedicated piece on the average AI girlfriend subscription price in 2026.
